Padma Vibhushan to General Bipin Rawat
The late General Bipin Rawat, India's first Chief of Defense Staff, was awarded Padma Vibhushan posthumously by President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday. The late General's daughters Kritika and Tarini took the honour in the program held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
In December last year, he died in a helicopter crash in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. General Rawat's wife Madhulika, his defence advisor Brigadier LS Lidder, Staff Officer to the Chief of Defense Staff Lt Col Harjinder Singh and decorated pilot Group Captain Varun Singh also died in the accident.
The Padma Awards, one of the highest civilian awards of the country, are awarded in three categories, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri. Awards are given in various disciplines/areas of activities. Arts, social work, public affairs, science and engineering, trade and industry, medicine, literature and education, sports, civil service, etc. The 'Padma Vibhushan' is given for exceptional and distinguished service.
'Padma Bhushan' is given for distinguished service of high order and 'Padma Shri' is given for distinguished service in any field. The awards are announced every year on the occasion of Republic Day.
This year 128 people got Padma awards
These awards are given by the President of India. This year the President has approved the conferment of two 128 Padma Awards.
This year 4 have been given Padma Vibhushan, 17 Padma Bhushan and 107 Padma Shri awards. 34 of the awardees are women and the list includes 10 persons from the category of Foreigners/NRIs/PIOs/OCIs and 13 posthumous awardees.
