Delhi will face a water shortage soon due to high levels of pollutants

Due to high levels of pollutants in the Yamuna in Wazirabad, water production from water treatment plants in Wazirabad and Chandrawal has been reduced by 25 percent to 50 per cent.


New Delhi: The summer has not even started showing its orgy properly that the issue of water shortage in Delhi has started coming to the fore. While on one hand the people of Delhi will face the heat, on the other hand they must brace themselves for the scarcity of water as well. The Delhi Jal Board has reported that the production at Wazirabad and Chandrawal water treatment plants will be reduced by up to 50 per cent due to high ammonia levels in the Yamuna river, resulting in water supply to some parts of Delhi.


Delhi Jal Board has the capacity to treat 0.9 ppm.

The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) informed on Monday that Chandrawal and Wazirabad water treatment plants can treat 90 million gallons (MGD) and 135 MGD water respectively. The ammonia level in the Yamuna at Wazirabad is currently eight ppm. According to the Bureau of Indian Standards, the permissible maximum limit of ammonia in drinking water is 0.5 ppm. Presently, the Delhi Jal Board can treat 0.9 ppm. In a statement, the DJB said, “Due to high levels of pollutants in the Yamuna at Wazirabad, water production from water treatment plants at Wazirabad and Chandrawal has reduced by 25 per cent to 50 per cent. Hence water supply will be affected from Monday evening till the situation improves," he said.


There will be a scarcity of water in these areas

The Delhi Jal Board has reported that the areas most affected by water shortage are Civil Lines, Hindu Rao Hospital and surrounding areas, Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar, Karol Bagh, Paharganj and NDMC areas, old and new Rajinder Nagar, Patel Nagar, Baljit Nagar, Prem Nagar, Indrapuri, Kalkaji, Govindpuri, Tughlakabad, Sangam Vihar and Ambedkar Nagar. Apart from this, water supply was also affected in Prahladpur, Ramlila Maidan, Delhi Gate, Subhash Park, Model Town, Gulabi Bagh, Punjabi Bagh, Jahangirpuri, Moolchand, South Extension, Greater Kailash, Burari and surrounding areas, Cantonment area and areas of South Delhi.
